Stone Stories

Why use stones to mark your moments? In the Old Testament altars were built to represent experiences with God. Built of rough stones and earth they could remain for years as continual reminders of where God had revealed Himself or what He had done.

The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the LORD who had appeared to him. - Genesis 12:7

Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder…to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord…These stone are to be a memorial - Joshua 4:5-7

After God revealed himself to Jacob in a dream, Jacob awoke from his sleep and thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar - Genesis 16, 18

Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He names it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” - 1 Samuel 8:22
